Handwashing reduces your risk of various diseases, including diarrhoea and pneumonia. According to UNICEF, research suggests that children who wash their hands with soap after using the toilet and before eating can reduce the risk of getting diarrhoea by over 40 per cent.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that teaching people about handwashing helps them and their communities stay healthy. Good hand hygiene can also reduce diarrhoeal illness in people with HIV by about 58 per cent. It can also reduce respiratory illnesses, like colds, in the general population by about 16-21%.
Germs, such as bacteria and viruses, are microscopic and can't be seen by naked eyes. They can be found everywhere, including objects like cell phones and your toothbrush, and can be transferred to your hands when you touch them. However, handwashing will help you avoid getting sick as well as spreading of germs to others.
Handwashing is also the best way to prevent the spread of skin infections, including measles, chicken pox, rashes, eczema, etc. Make sure that you wash your hands with clean water using soap before eating or after touching any object.
Good handwashing practices can help you prevent catching or spreading viruses, including the one that causes hepatitis A – a highly contagious liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus. Hepatitis A spreads from contaminated food or water or contact with someone who is infected.
Good hand hygiene can help prevent sepsis, a life-threatening complication of an infection. As per the WHO, sepsis can cause up to 6 million deaths globally - most of which are preventable. Sepsis occurs when an infection you already have - in your skin, lungs, urinary tract - triggers a chain reaction throughout your body.
